Steps to follow:

Step # 1:

Select two shades of colors that match with the colors scheme that already exists. Make sure to let the coat dry after you apply some base paint (timing: alkyd paints may be tacky, leave 2 to 3 hours for alkyd paints and 1 to 2 hours for latex paint).

Step # 2:

Use sand paper of 100 grit, then smoothly and slowly silt off paint patches, so the area under it can be seen. Clean that area and let it air dry for at least a day.

Step # 3:

Re-do the above same process with the second paint color and let it air dry one day as well. Protect the created distressed pattern perfectly by applying some clear lacquer. Make sure you use a water-based or a latex lacquer if latex mixture paints you are working with and use alkyd lacquer for alkyds mixture paints.
